Pour suivre toutes les activités spatiales, l'humanité a construit des stations spatiales colossales appelées «fondations» dans tout le système solaire. Après avoir réussi les examens d'entrée de l'Académie spatiale, Shima Katase se lance dans la fondation basée sur Terre Stellvia pour réaliser son rêve de voir la galaxie et empêcher une autre catastrophe interstellaire de détruire la Terre.
